The Modern Master Award is the highest honor presented by the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. Established in 1995, it was created to honor an individual who has enriched our culture through accomplishments in the motion picture industry.
This year the Santa Barbara International Film Festival is proud to honor George Clooney with its Modern Master Award for his many achievements in the art of cinema. Clooney's outstanding contributions to the film industry as an actor, director, writer and producer epitomize his commitment to the audience, as well as his devotion to the tradition of quality filmmaking.
The evening's celebration will include a film montage recognizing Clooney's body of work, a live on-stage interview hosted by an acclaimed film personality, and finally, the presentation of the award and acceptance speech.
Montecito Award: Naomi Watts

The Montecito Award was created in recognition of a performer who has given a series of classic and standout performances in his or her career. This year the Santa Barbara International Film Festival is proud to honor Naomi Watts with the 2006 Montecito Award.
Since her breakthrough performance in David Lynch's "Mulholland Drive," Naomi Watts has consistently impressed theater-goers with such memorable films as "The Ring," "21 Grams," for which she received an Academy Award nomination, "We Don't Live Here Anymore," "The Assassination of Richard Nixon," "I Heart Huckabees" and her most recent and touching portrayal of the legendary 'Ann Darrow' in Peter Jackson's "King Kong".
The evening's celebration will include a film montage recognizing Watts' body of work, a live on-stage interview hosted by an acclaimed film personality, and finally, the presentation of the award and acceptance speech.

Filmmaker James Cameron will receive the Attenborough Award for Excellence in Nature Filmmaking at the 21st Santa Barbara International Film Festival for his contributions to nature filmmaking. The tribute to James Cameron kicks off “Reel Nature”, a natural world film series. (This is a cooperative sidebar between SBIFF and the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History.)
James Cameron, who has directed box-office hits such as “Aliens”, “The Abyss”, “Terminator”, “True Lies” and “Titanic”, has made a number of innovative films using underwater filmmaking technology. As a result of his work while researching and filming “Titanic”, Cameron started the pursuit of a lifelong dream of exploring the ocean floor. With recent films, “Mysteries of the Titanic”, “Titanic Explorer” and “Aliens of the Deep”, Cameron continues his quest to conquer the challenges of deep-ocean photography and exploration in filmmaking.
The evening's celebration will include a film montage recognizing Cameron’s body of work, a live on-stage interview hosted by Reel Nature Director Mike deGruy, and finally, the presentation of the award and acceptance speech.
Imperia Breakthrough Performance of the Year Award: Heath Ledger

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival is proud to honor Heath Ledger with the "Breakthrough Performance of the Year" award for his heart wrenching portrayal as Ennis Del Mar in Ang Lee's tragic love story "Brokeback Mountain." Ledger's outstanding performance has been applauded by critics since the film began debuting at film festivals across the globe.
Ledger, who has been seen in such films as "The Patriot," "Ned Kelly," "Lords of Dogtown," "Monster's Ball," "Brothers Grimm" and most recently "Casanova," has already won a Best Actor award from The New York Film Critics Circle, as well as a Golden Globe Best Actor nomination for his outstanding performance.

The Riviera Award was designed to honor an actor whose career has influenced American cinema - someone whose past achievements and continued perseverance in the field of film has enriched society as a whole. With this thought in mind, the Santa Barbara International Film Festival is proud to honor Philip Seymour Hoffman with the Riviera Award.
With work in films ranging from "Scent of a Woman" to "Boogie Nights" and "The Talented Mr. Ripley," Hoffman has consistently shown both solid talent and versatility. A compelling performance by Hoffman in "Capote" has caused audiences and critics to sit up and take notice this year, though he has contributed greatly to the cinematic landscape of America throughout his
career.
